Vehicle Requirements & Faulty Equipment Policy

At launch, customers will provide their own vehicle 100% of the time.

Required website language
Livingston County Testing Service does not provide rental vehicles at this time. Applicants are responsible for providing a legal, insured, properly registered, and safe test vehicle.

The website should include a customer-facing vehicle checklist so applicants know what the examiner will inspect before the test begins. Customers should be told to check the vehicle before leaving home.

Vehicle checklist

  • Valid vehicle registration.

  • Valid proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance, where applicable.

  • Valid license plate and current tab.

  • Left outside and inside rearview mirrors.

  • Horn.

  • Tires with proper inflation, no cords showing, and no more than one missing lug nut.

  • Headlights.

  • Front turn signals.

  • Rear turn signals.

  • Taillights.

  • Brake lights.

  • Center-mounted rear brake light on 1986 and newer vehicles.

  • No obvious unsafe fluid leaks.

  • No obvious unsafe suspension damage.

  • No obvious unsafe exhaust damage.

  • Vehicle must be clean and safe enough for the examiner to enter and conduct the test.

Onsite inspection

  • Only the examiner administering the test will perform the vehicle safety/equipment inspection onsite.

  • The examiner has final authority to determine whether the vehicle is safe, properly documented, and suitable for the driving skills test.

Refund rule

  • If the vehicle does not pass the required safety/equipment inspection, the appointment is forfeited and no refund will be issued.

Substitute vehicle rule

If the original test vehicle fails inspection, the applicant may use a substitute vehicle only if:

  • The substitute vehicle is immediately available onsite.

  • The substitute vehicle has all required documentation.

  • The substitute vehicle passes the safety/equipment inspection.

  • The examiner determines there is enough time to proceed without negatively affecting later appointments.

Use of a substitute vehicle is 100% at the examiner’s discretion.

Vehicle failure information should appear in:

  1. Vehicle Requirements checklist page.

  2. Required booking acknowledgement before payment.

  3. Confirmation email reminder after payment.
